This repair procedure is for Kenmore, Whirlpool, Maytag and Amana top-load washers. You also can use the same basic repair steps to replace the shifter assembly on some Samsung and LG top-load washers. Using channel lock pliers, carefully loosen and remove both fill hoses.

Expect some water to pour out. Carefully tilt the washer forward and lay it on the front panel so that you can access the drain pump from the bottom of the washer.

Release the locking tabs on the wire harness connection and pull the wire harness out of the connector on the shifter. Push the new shifter into place. Make sure the peg is properly inserted into the drive system linkage. Position the wire harness plug in the connector on the shifter and push it into place, making sure the locking tabs snap into place. Carefully set the washer upright position and move it close enough to the fill hoses that you can reconnect them.

If the spin basket on your top-load washer is damaged, you can replace it with a new one. Just follow these step-by-step instructions. If there's water in your washer at the end of the spin cycle, the drain pump could be faulty. If the drain and drain hose are clear, you can follow these instructions to replace the drain pump. Manual transmission shifters let you shift the transmission through its different gears, and also into reverse and neutral. Automatic shifters allow you to put the car in park, neutral, reverse, drive, and sometimes a low gear. The shifter is usually found between the front seats, mounted into the center console.

X86 Assembly/Shift and Rotate

Some older cars, as well as some trucks, vans, and police vehicles have the shifter mounted to the steering column. The shifter refers to both the stick that you move around to change gears as well as the mechanical parts that shift the transmission. Underneath the stick are linkages and gear selectors. Bushings and bearings help these parts move smoothly to give you a smooth shift-feel.

These moving parts are protected by a leather covering called the shifter boot. The boot keeps dirt, dust and moisture inside the cabin from reaching the gear selectors or the transmission. Various kits exist to replace different parts of the shifter. These exist for both manual transmission shifters and automatic transmission gear selectors.

There are repair kits to replace the shifter knob, the shifter boot, and internal parts of the shifter such as the base and bushings. Fixing worn shifter parts can improve your driving experience by making shifting feel better. With simple use, parts like shifter linkages and their bushings can start to wear. They will make the shifter feel loose in your hand, which can make it harder to accurately make your shifts.

If your shifter feels loose or sloppy, replacing the shift linkage or bushings may help you shift crisply again. Some parts can also help protect the mechanical parts that make gear shifts happen.

The shifter boot can wear from use, or might get torn by sharp objects or an angry ex with a spare key. A torn shifter boot will allow dirt and debris into the shifter linkage. A new boot will help protect the linkage and keep your shifter working smoothly. The shift knob might seem all that important, but a new shift knob can do a lot to make the shifter feel better in your hand.

The difficulty of replacing shifter parts can vary a lot from one kit to another. Replacing a shifter knob, for example, is quite easy.

You just have to twist off the old knob and twist on the new one. Replacing a shifter boot is more complicated and will require you to remove the center console. Replacing internal shifter parts is the most complicated task of all these and may require some prior mechanical experience and recourse to a repair manual. Logical shifts are best used with unsigned numbers. Examples GAS Syntax :. In an arithmetic shift also referred to as signed shiftlike a logical shift, the bits that slide off the end disappear except for the last, which goes into the carry flag.

But in an arithmetic shift, the spaces are filled in such a way to preserve the sign of the number being slid. For this reason, arithmetic shifts are better suited for signed numbers in two's complement format.

Arithmetic shift dest to the right by src bits. Spaces are filled with sign bit to maintain sign of original valuewhich is the original highest bit. Arithmetic shift dest to the left by src bits. The bottom bits do not affect the sign, so the bottom bits are filled with zeros.

This instruction is synonymous with SHL. The names of the double precision shift operations are somewhat misleading, hence they are listed as extended shift instructions on this page. The src operand is always a register, the dest operand can be a register or memory location, the cnt operand is an immediate byte value or the CL register.

In bit mode it is possible to address bit data as well. The operation performed by shld is to shift the most significant cnt bits out of destbut instead of filling up the least significant bits with zeros, they are filled with the most significant cnt bits of src.

Automatic Shifters

Likewise, the shrd operation shifts the least significant cnt bits out of destand fills up the most significant cnt bits with the least significant bits of the src operand. Intel's nomenclature is misleading, in that the shift does not operate on double the basic operand size i.

Also, Intel's manual [1] states that the results are undefined when cnt is greater than the operand size, but at least for and bit data sizes it has been observed that shift operations are performed by cnt mod nwith n being the data size. In a rotate instruction, the bits that slide off the end of the register are fed back into the spaces.

Unless stated, these instructions can take either one or two arguments. From Wikibooks, open books for an open world. Category : Book:X86 Assembly. Namespaces Book Discussion. Views Read Edit View history. Policies and guidelines Contact us. In other languages Add links.
